Using technology to stem the tide of digital counterfeiting and fraud.

Digital counterfeiting and fraud are significant concerns, causing billions of dollars per year in losses, creating the potential to destabilize the economy and posing security risks to facilities and transportation systems. Digital watermarking enhances the security of identity and financial documents while protecting personal privacy.

Mitigating the digital threat to valuable documents is a top focus for Digimarc. We are actively addressing two primary areas:

  • Detecting genuine documents and identifying data alteration
  • Deterring digital counterfeiting

Digimarc is engaged in a multi-year relationship with an international consortium of leading central banks to develop and deploy a system for deterring the use of personal computers in banknote counterfeiting.

Digital watermarking technology protects identity documents by embedding unique, imperceptible digital information within each document, thus providing a machine-readable, cross-jurisdictional authentication solution that is cost-effective for state departments of motor vehicles and other ID issuers, including state and federal law enforcement and transportation agencies, customs and border security agencies, and airline security. Digital watermarking can:

  • Enable immediate cross-jurisdictional authentication of a document without the need for accessing any central databases.
  • Confirm the date of birth on a driver license.
  • Identify a counterfeit driver license or passport.
  • Verify the authenticity of an ID while protecting the document holder's privacy.
  • Provide information for forensic analysis to determine where and from whom the document originated.
