More Sustainable, Efficient Supply Chain with Connected Plastic

Manufacturers, consumer brands and retailers want to reduce plastic waste and transform plastic packaging and containers into data-rich objects for a digital supply chain. The Digimarc Platform can provide plastic with a “digital recycling passport” by enhancing plastic substrates with an unobtrusive texture embossed or etched into the plastic substrate. Digimarc can also enhance the shrink sleeve with an additional digital identity to support faster retail checkout and consumer engagement via smartphones.

A Digimarc recycling identity on plastic substrates could, for example, provide data on return and recycling rates, while industry standard identifiers, including GS1 Global Trade Item Number (GTIN), on the shrink sleeve can make checkout easier for shoppers and cashiers.

Shrink Sleeve Enhancement

In addition to the plastic substrate itself, Digimarc can become a seamless, unobtrusive element of shrink sleeves to provide a full range of consumer and operational benefits, including improved inventory management and fast retail checkout.

Digimarc for Packaging

Embossing

Embossing is the process of applying pressure to a substrate, such as plastic, to create a raised image or impression. Digimarc embosses plastic with a decorative pattern that could, for example, be read by detection systems at materials recovery facilities (MRFs). Digimarc can also deboss plastic by creating a decorative indent in the substrate.

Laser Ablation

Laser ablation is a “subtractive process,” where microscopic patterns are added to a portion of the substrate where miniscule bits of plastic have been removed. Digimarc continues to develop processes to put a digital identity directly into the substrate providing, for example, each item with a serialized identity for traceability operations.
