For example, the resale market for luxury goods has roughly doubled in size in the last four years and is now equivalent to 12% of the value of the market for new personal luxury goods, according to new research from Bain & Company. For luxury goods and other product categories where confidence in authenticity is a critical driver of purchases, the process of confirming an item is what it claims to be is arduous, often involving a series of manual, highly detailed, and largely imperfect verifications that can take months to complete. While these authenticity checks are done long before a customer has a chance to purchase an item, the impacts are felt in the form of higher prices and general inconvenience from longer wait times and limited supply.
