U.S. Embassy Guinea Launches Digital Tool to Encourage Public to Verify Online Content

Internet access in Guinea has grown 20 percent over the last ten years, introducing many first-time users to an online ecosystem vulnerable to manipulation. U.S. Embassy Guinea has launched a cutting-edge content verification tool to combat digital distortions and reinforce public confidence in official communications.

This tool, developed by U.S. firm Digimarc, applies invisible watermarking technology to images and allows Guineans to verify authentic Embassy content. In a time of increasing digital manipulation worldwide, this verification process empowers users to verify image authenticity, identify sources, and independently evaluate online content.

As of April 2025, all images of U.S. diplomats shared online by U.S. Embassy Guinea include a tamperproof digital watermark, invisible to the naked eye but verifiable via a simple online tool. Users can upload images at v.digimarc.com to determine whether the originals have been changed in any way. Each verified image also displays the Embassy logo and verification link, signaling authenticity to viewers and reinforcing the message: “Verifier avant de partager” (Verify before you share).

“This technology promotes a well-informed public armed with reliable information. It empowers our audiences to make informed decisions about what they believe and share online,” said Anne Dudte, U.S. Embassy Guinea’s Chargée d’Affaires. “We are not just protecting our content—we are also promoting transparency, responsible use of new technology, and critical thinking, especially among Guinea’s youth.”
