Oscars Academy member fined for screener piracy

The sum is to be paid to Warner Bros after the studio complained to the Los Angeles district court that actor Carmine Caridi, 70, had failed to respond to their civil lawsuit against him for giving away screener copies of The Last Samurai and Mystic River in the run-up to the 2003 awards. Pirated copies of the movies subsequently appeared on the internet with a give-away watermark tracing them back to Mr Caridi.
