Beaverton, Ore — March 10, 2011 — Digimarc Corporation (NASDAQ: DMRC) and its Digimarc Discover™ Platform was named a finalist in the Social Networking, Content, and Entertainment category of CTIA's annual Emerging Technology (E-Tech) Awards competition. The CTIA E-Tech Awards honor the most innovative new products in 14 categories spanning the areas of mobile apps, consumer electronics, enterprise and infrastructure. Winners will be announced at International CTIA WIRELESS® 2011, taking place March 22-24 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida. Pre-conference seminars begin on March 21.
The Digimarc Discover Platform provides a simple, yet powerful way to help transform media industries by giving publishers, agencies, and marketers the ability to connect with consumers through the device they carry with them 24/7 — their smartphone. Digimarc Discover uses multiple content identification technologies — digital watermarking, audio fingerprinting and barcode detection — giving smartphones the ability to "see, hear and recognize" different forms of media. Consumers will simply launch an app and point their phone at the item they are interested in to learn more and take immediate action. Upon recognition, Digimarc Discover delivers the corresponding choices back to the phone, such as view a video, launch an app, share with a friend, save for later or make a purchase.
Unique to Digimarc Discover is the use of digital watermarking technology. Digital watermarks are digital IDs that can be embedded into all forms of media. They are imperceptible to human senses, but easily detected by computers, networks and digital devices such as smartphones. The embedded digital watermarks do not occupy valuable real estate on printed content like barcodes and tags do. As a result, they have no negative impact on the design or overall aesthetics of the layout. In publications that feature multiple items or products on the page, each image or text block can be uniquely watermarked, allowing consumers to obtain specific information regarding each item they are interested in.
Mobile applications of Digimarc Discover are currently available for download from the iTunes App Store and Android Market and provide the ability to detect digital watermarks encoded into magazines, newspapers, packaging and other printed materials. As seen in this video, Digimarc has a functioning prototype the demonstrates the platform's ability to recognize all forms of media content — print, audio and video — and will be releasing upgrades to the available apps throughout upcoming months.
"The Digimarc Discover Platform is enabling pervasive intuitive computing by creating a new means of visual and audio search, and we are honored to have our innovation recognized as a finalist by a such a prestigious organization as CTIA International," said Bruce Davis, Chairman and CEO of Digimarc. "We believe Digimarc Discover will empower publishers, marketers, and advertisers with the ability to connect with consumers like never before, providing many new and innovative ways to increase consumer loyalty and brand engagement through rich, interactive experiences."
More than 300 entries were judged by a panel of media and industry analysts and scored on innovation, functionality, technological importance, implementation and overall "wow" factor. E-Tech winners, including Best of Show and Best Online Pick will be announced at the awards ceremony on Wednesday, March 23 at 2:00 p.m. EST from CTIA's Exhibit Innovations Stage on the tradeshow floor.
