Digimarc (NASDAQ: DMRC) is the pioneer and global leader in digital watermarking technologies.
Digimarc excels in supporting companies progressing in their digital transformation journey where the identification or the authentication of physical and digital items is critical.
Our digital watermarking technology has been deployed, often at massive scale, where other methods of identification or authentication don’t work well or don’t work at all.
Digimarc digital watermarks are robust, secure, and can be applied by software applications or hardware devices, including anywhere GenAI digital media is created.
The embedding of our digital watermark in digital media provides that content with a unique and deterministic identifier (no false positives) that travels with that content wherever it goes in the digital world. The identifier is used to convey any number of attributes about that digital content (ownership, authenticity, provenance, copyright, etc).
We also provide detection software that can reside in software applications or hardware devices, including anywhere GenAI models are run.
This detection software detects our digital watermarks and returns any attributes that the software application or hardware device is authorized to receive.
Applied to GenAI training, this would allow companies to train their models in a fair, sustainable and efficient way.
Applied to web browsers, smartphones, and social media platforms, this would allow citizens to discover the true, contextually-aware authenticity of digital content.
For an ecosystem of security, transparency, and true authenticity the following is required:
Watermarking AI content is best done at the device level. This solves the multiple problems that make doing at the AI Engine level unworkable and provides the opportunity for legitimate content creators to prove their content’s authenticity.
Watermark detection technology must be part of GenAI model training and at the device and/or platform (social media network, web browsers, etc) level for meaningful authenticity conveyance.
For nearly 30 years, Digimarc innovations and intellectual property in digital watermarking have been deployed at unprecedented scale as the foundation to numerous massive, multi-stakeholder, multi-national and mission critical systems, such as:
the BluRay antipiracy standard and the Digital Cinema Initiative to protect digital movies;
by Nielsen and Arbitron to measure television and radio audiences;
by many issuing authorities to authenticate and protect a majority of U.S. drivers’ licenses as well as other secure credentials in countries around the world;
and in partnership with a consortium of the world's central banks to help protect the world’s currencies.
Digimarc and its innovation team have been instrumental in supporting global industry and standards efforts spanning both the physical and digital world (audio, images, documents, and video). Examples include origination of the W3C Web of Things, refinement of the QR code symbology, co-chairing the GS1 Digital Link standard, convenor and voting member of multiple ISO work groups, and a member of and contributor to the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) content authenticity standards.
