Mobile Marketing Association Forum, Los Angeles, CA — November 17, 2010 — Digimarc Corporation (NASDAQ: DMRC) today announced Digimarc Discover™, a mobile reference platform that will enable smartphones, and other mobile devices, to "see and hear" all forms of media content using built-in cameras and microphones. Consumers will simply point the phone at content they are interested in and will be presented with a range of associated Internet services such as purchase a product, learn more, view a video, save for later, download a coupon, or share with a friend, for example. The Digimarc Discover platform will be available for licensing as a private label application or feature that can be integrated into existing applications.
Unique to Digimarc Discover is its ability to use various content identification technologies as needed, including the company's patented digital watermarking technology. Digital watermarks are easily embedded into all forms of media and are imperceptible to human senses, but quickly detected by computers, networks or other digital devices like mobile phones. Using a watermarking solution, marketers and publishers do not have to give up valuable space in print publications, advertisements or product packaging; nor does it impact the overall layout or aesthetics of the page.
"Digimarc Discover demonstrates our vision for ubiquitous, intuitive computing by creating a new means of visual and audio search that does not require conceptualizing and typing keywords," said Bruce Davis, Chairman and CEO of Digimarc. "Text search served the first generation of discovery well. It is time to move on to a simpler, yet more powerful model. Digimarc Discover provides such a platform that will enable more intuitive computing and transform media industries by providing publishers, marketers and advertisers with the ability to connect consumers with a wealth of new, interactive experiences that increase consumer engagement and brand loyalty."
Digimarc Discover will benefit consumers and a wide range of industries as well:
For those interested in evaluating the Digimarc Discover platform, demonstration applications are available in the iTunes App Store and Android Market that include the ability to detect digital watermarks in print. Application libraries with this capability are available for licensing today. In early 2011, a release is planned that will add music recognition and 1D barcode reading, with other releases to follow adding more capabilities. Digimarc continues to invest in mobile research and has a working prototype that is able to recognize all forms of media content — print, audio and video — as demonstrated in this video, showing additional capabilities that we anticipate will become part of the Digimarc Discover platform.
