Digimarc broadens barcode adoption, expands digital relevance of print materials and increases value of variable printing for customers

BEAVERTON, Ore. – January 14, 2016 – Digimarc Corp. (NASDAQ: DMRC) today announced a license agreement with HP Inc. to deploy Digimarc Barcodes in HP’s Link Technology enabling invisible watermarking to create dynamic adaptive digital experiences from any printed material such as product packaging, photos, textbooks and education materials.

The new agreement enables HP to respond to customers’ increased demand for variable printing and serialized content in HP’s targeted vertical markets.

Digimarc Barcodes can carry the same Global Trade Identification Numbers (GTIN) product data in traditional UPC/EAN consumer barcodes, but can also include serial numbers or other information. Because they are invisible, Digimarc Barcodes are imperceptibly replicated across all surfaces of print and packaging. Digimarc Barcodes make every part of the printed material readable by a smartphone or industrial scanner, which enables a wide range of potential applications.

HP’s Link Technology creates a fully interactive, cost effective link between printed and digital worlds – in which every printed instance can have a unique identifier that delivers many consumer and business advantages. For example, serial codes can track user interactions with marketing campaigns and direct mail advertising, authenticate products across the supply chain, better manage product recalls and many other important business use cases. Link can also provide adaptive learning from printed education materials, or bring photos and derivative products to life with videos, memories and resell opportunities. Digimarc Barcode, with its powerful combination of invisibility, accuracy and ease of use, simplifies the delivery of serialization for business enterprises, organizations and governments.

“Digimarc and HP have a long history of collaboration. This new initiative envisions enabling print to be an integral part of the modern mobile-centric, networked economy and society,” said Bruce Davis, CEO at Digimarc. “Through integration of the Digimarc Barcode platform into printing processes, important new functionality can be created in printed materials of all kinds. As a world leader in printers, presses, supplies and services, HP can facilitate global access to this new era for the industry.”

“With Digimarc Barcodes, Link Technology can deliver similar real-time, dynamic content available digitally directly from printed products while maintaining complete graphic freedom," said Moe Khosravy, VP of Software & Connectivity Platforms at HP. “Serialized marking enables intimate customer engagement, deep individualized analytics, help cost reduction and increased security for content and brand owners, and opens the Internet of Things world without the cost and hassle of embedded electronics.”
