Vanessa Guest: So, as you can see, it looks like many of you are aware of the basics. Some of you have on-hand familiarity. Some of you are already actively working with C2PA. For a couple of you, this is a new introduction.
Vanessa Guest: So, with that… Let's move on to introducing our speakers.
Vanessa Guest: Rather than read their bios at them, I'll let them introduce themselves. Dom Guillard is Director of Product for Content Authenticity and the IoT at SSL. Dom, tell us briefly what you work on and why this topic matters right now.
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: Yeah, sure. So, yeah, I've been working on C2PA for a while, contributing to the standard, co-chairing one of the work groups, and
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: I think this standard is very important, which makes it very motivating to work on it. It's a key building block if we want to make sure we leverage the best out of AI and generally everything that's happening around content. This standard is really one of the key building blocks to make sure
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: we can use it and interact with it in a way we still know what's real and what's generated. So, pretty excited to work on this.
Vanessa Guest: Great. Tony Rodriguez is Chief Technology Officer at Digimark. Tony, same question to you.
Tony Rodriguez: Okay, yeah, you know, to, build on what Dom was sharing is that
Tony Rodriguez: this effort around C2PA is really rewarding, because it's something that's bringing multiple industry partners together in a way that's really needed, and it's something that, you know, coming from Digimark's perspective.
Tony Rodriguez: You know, we've needed for, you know, a decade plus, as we've seen different forms of content being generated, but not a common way to express authenticity and trust.
Tony Rodriguez: In that, in that content. So that's actually really quite, quite important to see this come together, and really rewarding to see how fast it's been adopted, and how it's proliferating through and with the help of all the companies that are participating in the standard. So it's, it's pretty exciting to see it come together.
Vanessa Guest: Thank you both. Dom, the floor is yours.

Dom Guinard @SSL.com: Okay, so, yeah, thanks a lot for attending this webinar. Here, we wanted to talk a little bit about C2PA and introduce it to the audience that isn't necessarily familiar with it, and then we wanted to talk about some of the more advanced parts of C2PA.
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: To make it more trustworthy, durable, and interoperable.
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: So let me just, get started with a small agenda here. So we're gonna get started with
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: talking about C2PA in a nutshell, the basics of C2PA, then we're gonna talk about how certificates, in particular since the beginning of the year, have made CTPA manifest more trustworthy, and why.
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: and the different bits and pieces around CTPS certifications, certification, and then I'll hand over to Tony, our digital watermarking specialist from Digimark, to talk about how digital watermarkings are also contributing to make
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: C2P manifest stronger and stickier.
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: Starting with C2PA in a nutshell, for those who have never encountered C2PA, I think there were 2 or 3 people in the room, this is what it looks like. So, you have this little CR logo that appears on different assets. It can be images, videos, it can even be text, or PDFs, audio tracks as well.
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: And that essentially gives you Content credentials for the asset you're looking at.
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: What are content credentials? So, one of the best metaphors that I like for CTPA is to think of them as the nutritional facts of digital content.
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: Before we had nutritional facts on food, it was pretty hard to know where the food came from, what it was composed of, was it modified, does it contain any chemicals? Nutritional facts improved the situation there.
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: And so, just like we have nutritional facts to assess the quality of the food we eat, we need content credentials to assess the provenance of the media we consume. That's the core idea of content credentials, is to give you access to the provenance information of any asset you're looking at.
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: One of the biggest asks is, obviously, was it AI-generated, or was it AI modified? But CTPA goes way above and beyond AI generation. It tells you all the edits, all the tools, and even in certain cases, the people or organizations that made modifications, or
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: That own an asset that you're looking at.
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: So it's really a step up in terms of helping us understand the provenance of assets. And CTPA has been around for quite a while, but obviously the Gen AI rise, the rise of GenAI, gave really a boost
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: for C2PA adoption, and the past two years have seen tremendous space of adoption for C2PA. Starting with device manufacturers, you know, have
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: Almost all the major camera manufacturers are shipping cameras that are C2P enabled. That means the digital cameras are actually signing the content as they take the picture to prove it was taken by this camera.
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: So whether it's Sony, Fuji, Canon, Leica, like I was the first one.
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: all of those actually have now digital cameras that are C2P enabled. You also have the mobile phone manufacturers that are now embedding C2PA, so there are a number of Samsung phones, as well as Google phones, like the Pixel 10, that also sign
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: And capture C2PA manifest at the time of capture of an image or a video.
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: Then you also have the content platforms and the tools that have adopted it. You can think of the Adobe suite of tools, for instance, but you also have platforms like TikTok or LinkedIn that have adopted it. So if you ever see the little CR
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: logo appearing on an asset on LinkedIn, and it appears more and more these days. Just go ahead and click on it, and you'll see the content credentials appearing. This is C2PA in action.
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: Perhaps one of the best implementations, or at least most widespread implementations so far.
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: And then finally, almost all the Gen AI platforms are implementing it to be able to label synthetic content, whether it's the OpenAI tools with DALI,
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: or the Google tools, or Cloud, they, they all started to use C2PA manifest and to embed them so that we know the asset is coming from an AI tool.
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: C2PA has also got another boost of popularity because of the regulation. There's a regulation in California that enters enforce in August. There's also the EU AI Act, which is a pretty comprehensive
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: regulation about content disclosure that will require creators of AI content, but also generally encourages creators of all contents to start marking their content with something like C2PA and watermarking.
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: It doesn't require C2PA in all cases, but it's… C2PA is one of the implementations that would comply with the UAEI Act.
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: And the idea is to basically flag AI interactions so that people know that the asset was manipulated by AI or created by AI.
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: The timeline is pretty tight. August 2nd is when the rules become enforceable. There's a grace period if the system is already on the market up until December, but basically companies that generate AI content have to get ready
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: for it, and CTP is a great way to do that, because you can use it for…
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: the, you know, for the, compliance side of things, with the EUAI Act, but you can also use it for a lot of other things, tapping into the ecosystem.
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: That C2P enables.
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: So, in terms of,
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: what, we wanted to talk about today, above and beyond the basics of C2PA, we wanted to talk about, digital watermarks and trusted verifiable digital signatures, which really creates this triangle of trust for strong content credentials for online content.
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: And just giving you a little bit of a glimpse into certificates and C2PA,
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: Basically, what values are certificates and trust lists bringing to C2PA? Well, first of all, the C2PA trust list is something that has been put in place beginning of the year, and it ensures that you can trust the tools that sign the content. It's a machine-readable list of C2PA-compliant tools, so the C2PA tools that are adding content to a manifest, to a
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: finance, track.
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: Arno, needs to be on that trust list. And then they basically have…
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: a certificate that they use to sign the content, so that you really know which tool the content is coming from. And then there's a third pillar of certificates for people and organizations, where you can ensure that you know who the content is coming from.
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: And that's a modification, again, since January 2026. Before, it was fairly easy to get a certificate that allowed you to sign content as a tool. Now, it's a lot closer to the way it works with the WebPKI and our browsers.
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: And you need to, basically be compliant with a number of things, and then your… the identity of…
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: the generator product,
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: requester is validated, so you really have, then, a way for the clients, such as browsers or extensions… Chrome extensions, for instance, to verify the certificate and to ensure that the asset was signed by
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: A, conformant tool.
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: There are 3 levels, that are provided by CAs like SSL.com. So you have this C2PA signing certificate, which is issued by a recognized CA to a tool that is conformant with C2PA, so that… it proves that that tool has
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: past conformance, because a certificate can only be issued once a tool is CTP conformant and has been
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: going through a conformance process. So that's for tools. Then for people and organizations. So, for instance, you want to say, this picture was taken on a Leica camera.
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: And then, it was taken by this journalist from the BBC. So, journalists from the BBC is something you capture with another set of certificates called COG Identity Certificates.
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: This is a side specification to C2PA, so it's another organization that piggybacks on C2PA to allow
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: people and organizations adding their credentials to an asset. So now you know it's coming from that camera, and it's coming from that person, from that organization.
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: And finally, there's the timestamping authority. Each manifest can get a timestamp, and these timestamps basically extends the lifetime of the validation of an asset to beyond the validity of the certificate. So once the certificate expires, let's say one year from now.
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: And you're 10 years from now, and you still want to validate that this asset was created on a camera, for instance.
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: You use a trusted timestamp to basically prove that at the time of creating the manifest, the CTP manifest, the certificate was valid, and that's what this compliant TSA is used for. SSL provides solutions in all three pillars.
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: Finishing with just an example of, real-world use, so we worked, for instance, with, Suspline. It's a news outlet in Ukraine, and they've launched C2PA.
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: And it's especially relevant for them, because a lot of manipulative content is used for disinformation during the war in Ukraine, and so they have started to be able to push that on their assets, so that when an asset is claimed to be coming from Sispline.
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: You can now verify that it's really coming from them, so that's a pretty tangible use case.
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: few tools that we provide, you'll have that when we send the deck. For the sake of time, I won't go into all of them, but just want to mention that we also have, to lower the barrier of adoption of CTPA, we also have a free tier.
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: for small ventures and pre-launch companies, where we deliver free certificate, one free certificate, and then we also deliver free TSAs to extend the lifetime of the validation of an asset.
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: Over to, Tony to talk about what digital watermarks bring to the picture.
Tony Rodriguez: Terrific. Alright, thank you, Dom. So, in that graphic that Dom was describing, you know, you have two sides of that triangle.
Tony Rodriguez: This is where digital wire marking comes in. Excuse me, is to really create that durable side of binding the manifest and leveraging all the infrastructure that Dom just said to basically allow someone to come back and get to the manifest.
Tony Rodriguez: And that, that nutritional facts that, that Dom described previously.
Tony Rodriguez: Excuse me, if we can go to the next slide.
Tony Rodriguez: All right, so, really, what are watermarks bringing to C2PA? Well, in order to understand that, there's one aspect of the way that content and media is distributed, through social networks, through private networks, you know, through various forms.
Tony Rodriguez: And in that, in many instances.
Tony Rodriguez: what ends up happening is the manifest, that C2PA, you know, nutritional facts information that is attached to the file, typically as a header, gets stripped. And there are organizations like LinkedIn, and increasingly more that are honoring the presence of that, which is wonderful.
Tony Rodriguez: But there's just some workflows that will either remove that information, or just through manipulation of the image.
Tony Rodriguez: that information, the nutritional facts, will be removed. So, that's one aspect that has really been a core focus for DigiMark, even pre-C2PA, which is how to really bind information for authenticity and provenance to content.
Tony Rodriguez: The other one is manifest swap. If you have an adversarial attack or substitution, someone may want to modify that information to be able to say that, no, wait a second, I'm going to take a legitimate manifest and try and swap it with an altered one, or try and attach it to other content.
Tony Rodriguez: And then finally, there is the supporting of Gen AI. As Dom said, you know, one of the things that's really fueled the expansion of C2PA is really this, you know, this wealth of content and modification that's happening with generative AI, and so it provides a durable way to flag.
Tony Rodriguez: the presence of, you know, generative AI content.
Tony Rodriguez: So, a little bit of how this actually works. So, since C2PA2.2, as part of the standard, there's now a couple key components that enable all this. The first thing is that
Tony Rodriguez: Watermarks have been added to the vocabulary as an action. So it is a first-class citizen as far as something that has been done to the image to help create this durable connection. So there's this assertion that a watermark has been added to the image, or the audio, or text, whatever it might be.
Tony Rodriguez: Then there is, in the middle, a definitive list of watermarking algorithms and fingerprinting providers that are supporting this, again, durable connection between the content and the manifest.
Tony Rodriguez: And finally, what brings this all together is the Soft Binding Resolution API, and this is basically a mechanism that allows you to
Tony Rodriguez: recover, through this federated lookup, recover the manifest from the content itself. So, by being able to, either using the watermarking technology or fingerprinting technology.
Tony Rodriguez: get pointed back to the manifest, and do the federated lookup to retrieve it. So that's a little bit of the mechanics behind the scenes. Just to make this real, maybe we can go to the next slide.
Tony Rodriguez: I want to talk about an early use case that brings us all together. So, if you go back to Dom's point about, you know, provenance of the media that we consume.
Tony Rodriguez: This was an instance where the State Department in Ghanaia was having a significant challenge, because they use Facebook as the primary mechanism to communicate with, citizens in country.
Tony Rodriguez: And what was happening is that they were having either images just completely generated from AI or altered, legitimate U.S. State Department images altered, and then distributed in Facebook.
Tony Rodriguez: And there was no way for citizens to be able to validate, you know, back to this provenance of the content we consume, you know, what images they were seeing. So this was a solution that we worked with them to deploy that consisted of being able to, under the durable content credentials, add the watermark, tie it to the manifest.
Tony Rodriguez: But then create a mobile-friendly verification page that users could drop the image on, and it would come back and basically say, on the left, this is a legitimate image.
Tony Rodriguez: or the example on the right, this image has been altered, and I just highlighted there, there's, you know, a change in the book that the woman's holding. So, this is just an example of how all these pieces come together, also leveraging the digital signatures that Dom described.
Tony Rodriguez: One final take on this, just to describe how this happens, you know, maybe in the wild today, how you might see it, if we go to the next slide.
Tony Rodriguez: is…
Tony Rodriguez: Back to this point about the content credentials being, you know, pulled off of images. So, in LinkedIn, as Dom described, the little CR pin will show up, and that's wonderful. You can click right on it and get the information. But many other tools, such as X and other social networks, will strip that information off.
Tony Rodriguez: And so, there are now mechanisms, because of the durable content credentials, leveraging, you know, in this case, the Digimark watermark, whereby the manifest can be reattached. And so, what you're seeing here is…
Tony Rodriguez: the output of a Chrome extension that we were the first to deploy that basically does this. So in this instance, the image that you're seeing from this feed on X doesn't have the CR pin. However, the Chrome extension has
Tony Rodriguez: detected the presence of the image, recovered the manifest, via the watermark, and then displayed it here. So that's why in this panel, you'll see recovered, and in this case, signed by Dom, and that, you know, that this mana… that the manifest was reattached to this image after being stripped. So…
Tony Rodriguez: That gives you a little bit of a picture of how this can happen in practice.
Tony Rodriguez: And if we go to the last slide here, there are multiple watermarking algorithms that are out there. There's a family of open-source ones that, that Adrobe Trustmark is one of those. And then there's more commercial algorithms, Digimark, obviously being that category, they're really focused on security, robustness.
Tony Rodriguez: imperceptibility, and so on. And then finally, as far as extensions, as I was talking about, there's the Digimark extension, and Adobe also has an extension that supports Adobe Trustmark. We support both as part of our long-standing relationship with Adobe.

Vanessa Guest: So… Dom, Tony, quick reaction to these numbers before we take questions?
Vanessa Guest: Let's see…
Tony Rodriguez: Yeah, just encouraged to see the, you know, the short time frame with everything that's going on, particularly with policy and, you know, coming online. That's, great to see, so much interest in either already having implemented, but in the next 6 months.
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: Yeah, indeed, I think it's a pretty impressive ramp-up for a standard, and it shows how much it's needed and timely, actually.
Vanessa Guest: Okay, so we have two questions in the Q&A. The first question is for Dom. The trust list model mirrors WebPKI, but WebPKI took two decades to mature its revocation and governance practices. What's the equivalent gap you're most worried about in the SU2PA trust list today?
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: Yeah, I think it's also an evolution, right? I mean, from the list that existed before, prior to January 2026, was fairly easy to get on, and that led to a set of criticisms of C2PA, where
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: You know, people were saying you can pretend to be a certain tool or a certain entity.
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: all the way up to now having this conformance program, which is already a step up. We're now also trying to make sure this conformance program gets as strong as possible, potentially also getting very close to the kind of auditing you have in the web PKI world, and leveraging that type of auditing.
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: Because delivering those certificates is a serious matter, because if you deliver the certificate to the wrong entity, you can then pretend to generate content from another entity, so things can get very confusing. So, yeah, it's an evolution process.
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: Already made some great steps recently.
Vanessa Guest: Great, and now a question for Tony. Watermarking vendors don't all interpolate today. Does the industry coverage on one or two dominant algorithms, or does the soft binding resolution API make that convergence unnecessary?
Tony Rodriguez: Yeah, no, no, great question, and this is something, you know, having deployed watermarking, you know, solutions now for going on 25, close to 30 years, this is something that we've seen, and this question has come up in the past in other domains.
Tony Rodriguez: So, you know, generally speaking, you know, I'll speak for Digimark, but then generally, as far as what I'm observing within the ecosystem is, we spent, quite a bit of time over the years working with others, and so to understand how to interoperate or layer different watermarking technologies.
Tony Rodriguez: Particularly because different use cases will put different domain… different constraints and design, you know, design goals on different watermarking techniques. So you may have one or two, you know, watermarks, in a given piece of media, depending on the use case.
Tony Rodriguez: But more specifically for C2PA, what we're seeing is, is that within certain industries, certain areas, I think there's going to be some convergence around, you know, several providers. However, we want to make sure that they can all, you know, we can allow someone to get those nutritional facts regardless of.
Tony Rodriguez: you know, where that content came from and what the underlying watermarking technology is. And so, you know, one of the areas of active conversation that, you know, Dom is helping facilitate is the idea of a signpost watermark, basically one that indicates
Tony Rodriguez: Which secondary watermark is in the content itself, and that secondary watermark being specific for the use case and the, you know, the application, and how that content is meant to be distributed.
Tony Rodriguez: And so, the Chrome extension that we… we deliver supports the Adobe Trustmark watermark, in a signpost modality, and then the Digimark watermark, also as well, just to either standalone DigiMark or in response to that signpost. So that's…
Tony Rodriguez: That's one way that's being explored right now to address this.
Vanessa Guest: Dom a question for you. How do you see quantum impacting the future, especially with AI?
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: Yeah, I think Quantum will impact the certificate world at large, not only for C2PA, and so we gotta prepare for that, and it's coming probably sooner than we think, or we would like to think, so yeah, that's the bad news, I guess. The good news is,
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: C2P is already getting ready to support quantum-proof signatures, and the CAs, like SSL, are also getting ready
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: With quantum-proof certificates, so this is something that has been identified as an area of development, and has been, has started to be tackled by the C2P committees.
Vanessa Guest: All right, two more questions before we close today's session. So this one for Tony, do C2PA soft-binding watermarks survive AI-based edits with strong transformations, like the removal of an object, etc?
Tony Rodriguez: Yeah, so once you go into, and I'll go a little deep here, depending on what that… in an AI workflow, when you're doing AI edits, AI…
Tony Rodriguez: constructed, or AI tools doing edits on an image. What ends up happening is that image goes from the spatial domain pixels into the latent domain, and then it'll come back out into the spatial domain. And so, depending on what sort of… you can think of it as compression. Depending on how aggressive that compression is down to the latent domain and back out, the answer may be yes, the answer may be no. What we've seen is that
Tony Rodriguez: For some watermarks and some of our work, they're specifically designed to address some of those transformations. You can survive through some of those transformations, but other ones, if you're really going to a very compressed, latent domain, then that's a significant challenge, because all the pixels that are coming out of the backside of that
Tony Rodriguez: Transform, or basically being regenerated
Tony Rodriguez: basically from scratch, and so that makes it a difficult challenge on the watermarking side.
Vanessa Guest: Okay, and one final question for you both.
Vanessa Guest: For content that needs to prove authenticity 10 or 20 years from now, what's the piece of the durability story you're least confident is solved?
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: That's an interesting one.
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: I think, first of all, using a standard is a great way to ensure durability and, you know, of…
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: Over time, over a longer period of time, because…
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: typically, standards live for a long time, so that's… that's great. I think,
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: Yeah, the kind of things we've been talking about here, how to make the system stronger, stickier, are the kind of things we need to think about so that these manifests don't disappear the first time you publish an asset online.
Dom Guinard @SSL.com: And that you can continue to verify the signatures and the provenance of the asset over time.
Tony Rodriguez: Yeah, and I would just add that, you know, we've been deploying, you know, watermarking now, again, for 20, 25 years, and we still have customers that are leveraging the presence of those watermarks that were put in the media, you know, that long ago.
Tony Rodriguez: And so, it's just making sure that you have that consistency of, an availability of an API and a standard to be able to reattach the manifest. And that, to me, is what's really exciting about C2PA, is…
Tony Rodriguez: is it creates that common, through the soft binding resolution, API, creates, you know, what I'm convinced will be a long-standing interface to be able to, you know, reattach, identify and reattach that manifest.
