Agreement with the world’s largest manufacturer of over–the-counter pharmaceutical products for store brands provides more consumer information and customer engagement
BEAVERTON, Ore. – January 7, 2016 – Digimarc Corp. (NASDAQ: DMRC) today announced a collaboration with Perrigo Company (NYSE: PRGO), the world’s largest manufacturer of over-the-counter pharmaceutical products for the store brand market. Perrigo is joining other leading suppliers as a Digimarc channel partner to enable it to provide Digimarc Barcode services to its retail customers. Retailers using the Digimarc Barcode-enhanced products can increase mobile shopper engagement, greatly improve point-of-sale efficiency and provide consumers easier access to retailers' e-commerce pages from the "smart" labels on the products for a more exceptional omnichannel customer experience.
In addition to supplying the majority of private label over-the-counter medicines for the nation's leading retailers, Perrigo provides label and packaging design, as well as pre-press services, for its retail customers' packaging. By including Digimarc Barcode in artwork and product packaging concurrently, Perrigo will enable its retail customers to engage consumers in a more meaningful way, providing significantly more information about the benefits of the products they are looking to purchase. By simply pointing a smartphone camera at a Digimarc Barcode-enabled package, consumers can access a wide range of relevant product information that is easily updated at any time by Perrigo or its retailers, including directing customers to their e-commerce sites. Digimarc Barcode also allows faster and easier checkout at point of sale, providing significant operational efficiencies for retailers. Finally, embedded barcodes also provide easier inventory management and time- and labor-savings.
The combination of consumers’ desire to know more about the products they purchase and government regulations requiring more information on product packaging has put increasing pressure on package designers, who are grappling with limited packaging real estate. The Digimarc Barcode is imperceptibly replicated across all sides of a package and does not infringe upon existing designs. Depending upon physical size, a Digimarc-enhanced package or label may contain hundreds of "invisible" barcodes.
“We want to provide our customers with the latest technology advancements that can assist in growing their own label business,” said Jeff Needham, Perrigo's executive vice president, U.S. consumer healthcare. “Consumers want more information about health-related products, and our retailers are continually looking for ways to deliver that information while improving their own operational efficiency. The Digimarc Barcode is an ideal way to provide additional retailer and consumer benefits without cluttering product design.”
This partnership is one of many recent new additions to the Digimarc Channel Partner program. The program is designed to provide multiple sources of key elements of critical infrastructure for globalization of Digimarc’s Discover platform and barcode.
“With the adoption of Digimarc Barcode, Perrigo is demonstrating product leadership, delivering greater opportunities for consumer engagement and building brand loyalty for customers,” said Bruce Davis, CEO at Digimarc. “Easy and effective communication of information about products is also becoming increasingly important in their field. We look forward to closely partnering with them in this very important and challenging area of consumer product marketing.”
