Collaboration with Microsoft will showcase benefits to retailers for greater operational efficiency and increased consumer engagement with products
BEAVERTON, Ore. and NEW YORK CITY, NY – Jan. 14, 2016 – Digimarc Corp. (NASDAQ: DMRC), the inventor of the Digimarc Discover® platform featuring the imperceptible Digimarc Barcode for automatically identifying and interacting with virtually any media, announced Microsoft Corp. will demonstrate the benefits of Digimarc Barcode scanning in a Windows environment for the first time at the National Retail Federation’s 2016 Big Show.
In collaboration with Digimarc, Microsoft will demonstrate the speed and accuracy of scanning Digimarc Barcode-enabled product packaging with a Datalogic Magellan™ 9800i scanner powered by Microsoft Dynamics for Retail, the company’s comprehensive unified retail point of sale (POS) software solution.
Additionally, Microsoft will demonstrate for attendees a Digimarc-developed prototype implementing Digimarc Barcode detection by the Windows 10 operating system on a Surface Pro 4, the company’s new device that brings the best of a laptop and the best of a tablet together. Microsoft will show this Windows 10-based test application at NRF in Booth #2803 from January 17-19, 2016.
The demonstrations are the result of Microsoft’s early experiments with the Digimarc Discover platform and Digimarc Barcode at the company’s Retail Experience Center, a 20,000-square-foot innovation center focused on the future of retail and located in Redmond, Wash. near Microsoft headquarters.
The Digimarc Barcode is gaining adoption in the retail industry, providing significant speed and accuracy at checkout for retailers. Digimarc Barcodes are invisible to the eye and replicated across all sides of a product package. Digimarc Barcodes are detectable by scanners during checkout and by smartphone cameras enabling digital experiences delivered to consumers directly from packaging.
Software developers can build and deploy more powerful mobile apps that read UPC/EAN codes and other traditional 1D and 2D consumer barcode formats commonly used at retail by integrating the Digimarc Discover mobile software development kit (SDK). The SDK offers unprecedented performance and seamless reading of conventional barcodes, making identification of products by mobile consumers easier and more reliable than ever. The SDK also includes scanning of Digimarc Barcodes for print, packaging and audio, further ‘future-proofing’ the mobile app in light of increasing adoption of the Digimarc Barcode.
“This collaboration is an opportunity to explore new applications with an industry leading innovator as we continue to establish the Digimarc Barcode as a key component of retail systems and consumer mobile experiences,” said Tony Rodriguez, Chief Technology Officer at Digimarc. “We believe this is a revolutionary technology that will invigorate many aspects of retail operations and the customer experience, and we’re excited to showcase the Digimarc Barcode on Windows 10 at NRF.”
“We’re always looking for new, creative ways to improve the usability and value of our products and services,” said Marty Ramos, Strategy and Innovation, Worldwide Retail, Consumer Products & Services at Microsoft. “The Digimarc Barcode has the potential to improve retail for everything from front-of-store checkout to at-home customer experiences and throughout the supply chain.”
